Moving feedback forwards: understanding the processing and recipience of feedback information
Historically, the focus of research on effective assessment and feedback has been on the actions and competence of educators. More recently, the focus has shifted to the student and their own capacities to process and implement feedback to facilitate learning. In this seminar, I will discuss how insights from psychology can help us to understand emotional, behavioural, and motivational responses to feedback. Having outlined the core psychological dimensions of feedback processes, I will then discuss how these insights can help us to understand challenges inherent to feedback processes in education. I will share findings from my recent programme of research into students’ cognitive processing of feedback information, and draw out key implications for practice.
